The earth was formless and empty (תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ, *tōhū wābōhū*); darkness (חֹשֶׁךְ, *ḥōšeḵ*) covered the face of the deep (תְּהוֹם, *tehom*) of the waters (מַיִם, *māyim*), and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters (עַל־פְּנֵי מַיִם, *ʿal-pənê māyim*).

### Day 1

And God said: “Let there be light (אוֹר, *’ōr*)!” And there was light.
And God saw that the light was good.
And God said: “Let there be an expanse (רָקִיעַ, *rāqîaʿ*) above the face of the waters (עַל־פְּנֵי מַיִם), as a boundary between light and darkness (חֹשֶׁךְ, *ḥōšeḵ*).”

The earth brought forth vegetation: plants producing seed according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit whose seed is in them according to their kinds.

And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good.
And there was evening, and there was morning — the sixth day.

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their array.
On the seventh day, God completed the work that He had done, and He rested (שָׁבַת, *šāḇaṯ*) on the seventh day from all His work.
And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work He had created and made.
And there was evening, and there was morning: the seventh day.
