The earth was formless and empty (תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ, *tōhū wābōhū*); darkness (חֹשֶׁךְ, *ḥōšeḵ*) covered the face of the deep (תְּהוֹם, *tehom*) of the waters (מַיִם, *māyim*), and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters (עַל־פְּנֵי מַיִם, *ʿal-pənê māyim*). ### Day 1 And God said: “Let there be light (אוֹר, *’ōr*)!” And there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God said: “Let there be an expanse (רָקִיעַ, *rāqîaʿ*) above the face of the waters (עַל־פְּנֵי מַיִם), as a boundary between light and darkness (חֹשֶׁךְ, *ḥōšeḵ*).” And God made the expanse and placed it above the waters. And God called the expanse Heaven. And God called the light day (יוֹם, *yōm*), and the darkness He called night (לַיְלָה, *laylāh*). And there was evening, and there was morning: the first day. ### Day 2 And God said: “Let the waters under the heavens (תַּחַת הַשָּׁמַיִם, *taḥat haššāmayim*) be gathered into one place, so that dry land may appear!” And so it was. And God called the dry land earth (אֶרֶץ, *ʾereṣ*), and the gathered waters He called seas (יַמִּים, *yammîm*). And God said: “Let the earth bring forth vegetation (דֶּשֶׁא, *dešeʿ*), plants producing seed (זֹרֵעַ זֶרַע, *zōrēaʿ zeraʿ*) and fruit trees bearing fruit according to their kinds, whose seed is in them, upon the earth (עַל־הָאָרֶץ, *ʿal-hāʾāreṣ*).” And so it was. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants producing seed according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit whose seed is in them according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning: the second day. ### Day 3 And God said: “Let there be lights (מְאֹרֹת, *məʾōrōt*) in the expanse of the heavens (בִּרְקִיעַ הַשָּׁמַיִם) to shine upon the earth and to separate the seasons, the days, and the years.” And so it was. And God made two great lights — the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning: the third day. ### Day 4 And God said: “Let the waters swarm with living creatures, and let birds fly above the face of the expanse of the heavens (עַל־פְּנֵי רְקִיעַ הַשָּׁמַיִם).” And God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every bird with feathers according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening, and there was morning: the fourth day. ### Day 5 And God said: “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creeping things, and wild animals according to their kinds.” And so it was. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and every creeping thing on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying: “Be fruitful and multiply abundantly, filling the face of the earth.” And there was evening, and there was morning: the fifth day. ### Day 6 And God said: “Let there be **earthlings** [אָדָם, *ʾāḏām*] in My image, after My likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the livestock, the whole earth, and every creeping thing that moves on the earth [עַל־הָאָרֶץ, *ʿal-hāʾāreṣ*].” Thus God created the **earthlings** in His image; in the image of God He created them — male and female He created them. And God blessed them and said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, and every living creature that moves on the earth.” And God said: “Behold, I have given you every plant that produces seed on the face of the whole earth, and every tree that has seed in its fruit; these shall be food for you. And to every beast of the earth, every bird of the heavens, and every creeping thing on the earth — every being with the breath of life — I have given every green plant for food.” And so it was. And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning — the sixth day. ### Day 7 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their array. On the seventh day, God completed the work that He had done, and He rested (שָׁבַת, *šāḇaṯ*) on the seventh day from all His work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work He had created and made. And there was evening, and there was morning: the seventh day. ## Attribution The interpretations and conclusions belong to Paul Csavdari.
