In my interpretation, the Fifth Trumpet unfolds in two distinct stages. In 1462, the Abyss is opened and the smoke rises from it. In 1540, the locusts emerge from that smoke, represented by the Society of Jesus. This episode focuses on the first stage: the intellectual upheaval symbolized by the smoke from the Abyss.
1462 marks the turning point when European thought detached itself from ecclesiastical control and began operating as an independent intellectual force. Two parallel currents triggered this shift: the direct recovery of ancient texts and the rebirth of philosophy in its original, unfiltered form.
Petrarch’s return to the sources reopened the ancient world and weakened medieval intellectual dominance, while Ficino’s circle revived Plato and Aristotle in their authentic voices—not merely through the scholastic versions shaped to fit Church doctrine. From that moment, philology, logic, and human-centered reasoning stopped functioning only as instruments of the Church and became autonomous judges of its claims.
1462 stands as the true fracture point: the separation between medieval religious philosophy and the rise of independent inquiry. A new era begins here—one in which knowledge defines its own standards and no longer depends entirely on institutional authority.
